Nara International Strategy Center held a Vietnam Cultural Lecture entitled “A Glimpse into University Life in Vietnam” at the Nara Colleges Exchange Terrace on Friday, July 10, in collaboration with Nara Prefecture.

 

The lecture was organized for people living, studying, or working in Nara Prefecture with the aim of introducing various aspects of university life in Vietnam, including academic studies, student life, and food culture, while promoting a deeper understanding of the lifestyles, values, and culture of Vietnamese youth.

 

The lecturer, Ms. Tong Bao, is a Vietnamese national currently serving as a Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) for Nara Prefecture. Drawing on both the current state of higher education in Vietnam and personal experiences as a university student, the lecturer provided participants with valuable insights into Vietnamese campus life.

 

During the lecture, participants learned about the three main types of universities in Vietnam: national universities, public universities, and private universities. One particularly interesting topic was the compulsory or quasi-compulsory course in national defense and security education that many university students are required to take. As part of this program, students typically spend several weeks to one month at a National Defense Education Center, where they attend intensive lectures and practical training while wearing military uniforms.

 

The lecturer also introduced student life outside the classroom. In Vietnam, it is common for six to eight students to share a dormitory room, and meals are often prepared in large portions and shared among roommates. Some students also live with host families, becoming part of an extended household. These practices provided an interesting contrast with Japan, where many university students live independently.

 

Another highlight of the lecture was the introduction of freshman welcome events at Vietnamese universities. These celebrations often feature performances such as dance and singing, with students appearing on stage in colorful costumes reminiscent of Japanese idol performances. The presentation offered participants a glimpse into the vibrant and modern campus culture of Vietnam.

 

Following the lecture, participants also received information about the FY2026 Next Generation Development Program by Nara Prefecture, which includes a student exchange program to Hue City, Vietnam. The session provided an excellent opportunity for attendees to deepen their interest in Vietnam and learn about future opportunities for international exchange.

 

Nara International Strategy Center will continue to work closely with Nara Prefecture to provide students and local residents with opportunities to enhance their intercultural understanding and global awareness while promoting international exchange.
